Duck Hideaway -10"x7" watercolour

Cat tail screen behind a small hill with a babbling black winter stream.

Private from condos and walking path; ducks bath.

This is their recluse, their spa away from the quacking crowd.

Only a light pattern reveals their movement in their own escape.

Thicket of Lace-10"x7" watercolour

Tranquil thicket dressed with winter lace.

Boughs frothed weighed heavy with snow.

Startled red breast of robin looking for his perch.

Uncovers a group gathering of chickadees hidden feasting on berries.

Arguing blue jays take no notice, dark clean stream runs through.

Lone Boat -10"x7" watercolour

Gold sun hit glass over barbed wire tangle of vines.

Lone boat she appears cradled on mount pointing to frozen waves of the basin.

This one she remains in a empty marina once filled but now closed.

She being separate and apart shows her grace with the reflections on hull and glass.

Warm light poking through clouds onto ice behind her.

Harbour Seal -10"x7" watercolour

Monday morning I saw a squirming speck in the distance on the ice in the basin.

When I looked closer with binoculars I could make out a harbour seal having a private party jittering and jiving to an ancient song.

It was -20c the open water behind her steamed from the freezing air.

She lay on ice that had rippled waves of snow that looked like white water.

The harbour seals are birthing their calves and have been for the past week.
